Ribosomes read a 3-base code: the genetic code. Each 3 base combination is a word (codon) that indicates a certain amino acid should go in that position. Ribosomes always begin at an aug (start codon) In bacteria, transcription and translation can happen at the same time. In eukaryotes, transcription and translation are separated. Dna replication - making dna from other dna. Transcription - making rna copies of dna. Translation - making proteins from rna transcripts. A mutation is a change to the base sequence in the dna. Mutations can happen spontaneously (errors in dna replication) Mutations can also be caused by mutagens (radiation, chemicals) Silent mutation: base changed, but no amino acid change. Nonsense mutation: amino acid changed to a stop codon. Insertion/deletion mutation: add/subtract one or more bases. Frameshift mutation: mutation affects downstream amino acids. In-frame deletion: multiples of 3, amino acid gone, downstream unaffected.
