Document Summary

Reaction linking a favorable reaction can drive an unfavorable one, if they"re linked by an enzyme. Anabolic converts simple molecules into complex molecules: requires energy. Catabolic complex molecules are broken down into simple molecules: generate energy. Cells like to store energy in complex forms, like sugar, starches, and fats. Releasing all the energy at once would generate so much heat, it would damage cells. Need energy to be released in small, safe packets. Want the energy to be stored in a convenient form to be used when and where it"s needed. Substrate-level phosphorylation: glycerol has a phosphate it doesn"t want, gives it to adp to become atp. Oxidative phosphorylation: chemiosmosis to create atp from adp, huge energy output. Photophosphorylation: light + chlorophyll to drive the creation of atp molecules. Break down complex molecules in steps, so the energy released is manageable. We"ll study the way glucose is catabolized to gain energy.
