The energization: inner state that can take form as desire and take form as drive (hunger, thirst, sex) Direction of behavior: channel outlet, toward what and away from what. Evolutionary: in early 20th century, psychologists believed that our motivation is biologically rooted in our instincts. Instinct theory: are biologically fixed patterns of behavior are unlearned, universal among the specified and released by specified environmental factors. Problems led to long list of instincts, parenting instinct, greed instinct, curiosity instinct. Humans tend to be greedy, curious, provided description of human behavior but failed to provide explanation. These four drives exist in the organism. Exist in cyclical fashion, must rid of tension such as hunger. Problem: provides no account of why people engage in behaviors that are arousing. Humans are primarily motivated to achieve and maintain a state of optimal arousal. People prefer activities that are optimally challenging for them, sometimes process is called flow.
