Psychological needs: intra-individual factors that guide need satisfying behaviors. Biopsychosocial: interactions b/w biological, psychological, & situational factors. Early theories: drive theory: goal is to reduce arousal elicited by disruption in homeostasis (eg. , hunger) Arousal leads to prepotent responses (whatever we"re used to doing) well-learned/automatic, least cognitive demand. When facing social pressure, we rely on prepotent responses. Performance on task determined by effort/prepotent responses & attributes of task. Prepotent response may not be the best response for that situation (eg. , playing in first game of a new sport: rational decision models: behavior is motivated by our expectations of outcomes. We choose what will produce the best outcome for ourselves doesn"t always happen: intrinsic v. extrinsic motivation: motivation can be internal or external to self. Intrinsic: hobbies, doing what you like to do no expected reward/outcome.
