HORT 3503 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Plant Nursery, Christmas Tree Production, Ornamental Plant
Document Summary
Lecture 21: sustainable and organic ornamental production: nurseries and cut flowers. Usda does not certify nonfood crops so there is no federal label or certification program. Many certification agencies certify and label organic production of ornamental plants. Sustainability of nursery production is becoming mandated by federal and state agencies: a very resource intensive business; a high potential for pollution; increasing regulations and laws. Sustainability is becoming a big issue for the industry as a whole: increasing sust. Floriculture flower production (bedding plants; potted and foliage plants; cut flowers; herbaceous perennials) Nursery production woody plants (trees and shrubs) in field and pot production. Sustainability issues: media for growing; water use; pesticides; containers; energy used in production; labor; and seasonality of sales. Conventional ornamental plant production companies are large consumers of pesticides, fertilizers, and energy, and large potential as point source polluters.
