People have kept animals in captivity in menageries for thousands of years,s long before the concept of zoo ever existed. Wealthy elites in ancient egypt, greece, china, and rome kept exotci animals as a demonstration of wealth of individuals or wealth of the empire--animals were often gifts from the leaders of other kingdoms or states. Recent evidence shows menageries in~5500 bp with hippos, elephants, baboons, wildcats. ~2800 ybp capital of the empire had botanic gardens with menagerie. Won conquest of dacia and brought home 500kk pounds of gold too so he wanted to demonstrate his wealth. 11000 animals slaughtered including lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, bulls, stags, crocodiles, and serpents. By late 1600s, private menageries were status symbols for wealthy europeans, and commoners were not able to view them. Commoners had to see animals as a part of travelling shows, where exotic animals were exhibited alongside freaks and native peoples. Shift to keeping animals for entertainment in urban centers.
