Name for both underworld and god who ruled it. Possible to enter from the land or the sea. Had different sections, but descriptions of topography not consistent. Souls of the dead lived in underworld. Tartarus/erebus: used to refer to the whole underworld or other section where souls are tortured. Elysium/elysian fields: paradise, heaven where heroic souls lived happily. Abducted persephone, and brought her to the underworld to be his queen. Psychopompos: guide of souls to and from underworld. Prevents escaping from underworld ferryman of the underworld. Often portrayed as an elderly man with an oar.
