It"s all about the expansion of gas bubbles. Plinian eruption a violent eruption with the ash clouds/tephra; eruptions with these flows that go up & go down: named after roman author & statesman pliny who died in 79 a. d. eruption of mt. Vesuvius trying to help people: the particles of debris rain down in a tephra fall & eventually accumulate on ground as tephra deposits. Tephra is when the debris accumulates, the stuff that comes out. Pyroclastic flows are also called nu e ardente (glowing cloud: historic observations indicate that pyroclastic flows can reach velocities of more than 700 km/h. In june 1997, 19 killed from pyroclastic flows: mt. Vesuvius & volcano town of pompeii was another one, with 6 pyroclastic flows. In 79 a. d: killed 2k with ash cloud that came down, most people had left earlier due to volcanic bombs falling pre-eruption, was rediscovered in 1748 & excavation began, still an active volcano that smokes.
