Born on august 12, 1859 in falmouth massachusetts. Published poetry, travel essays, and scholarly books. She was so moved by the pike"s peak view, she wrote the poem america the beautiful. Published original version on july 4th, 1895 in a magazine first. Some people thought the word beautiful was cliche. Since 1913, the poem has not changed. In 1926 a contest was held by the national foundation of music club to set her poem to music. In 1904, she published a revision, which appeared in a newspaper. During the same year, they tried to get it to be the national anthem. Today, some prefer it over the star spangled banner. Ironic, given how polarized the country is right now. She had a relationship with a woman for 25 years.
