By George Herbert Mead in 1934
SIT is considered a intrapersonal communication theory
Goal (purpose) of (SIT)
To explain how humans through interaction create symbolic worlds and
how these worlds affect behavior
He believes its a social event - in order for meaning to be created their
needs to be interaction through people
Wants to explain how people in interaction with another create meaning
using symbols and how the meaning that’s created between them affects
their behavior
SIT’s concepts and explanations
Mind - the ability to use symbols that have common social meanings
(language or nonverbal symbols)
Idea that we cannot interact with others until we learn language
Mead defines language as the verbal and nonverbal symbols
organized into patterns to express thoughts and feelings
Language uses significant symbols - through language we can
share meanings, anticipate responses of others
Mind reflects and creates society - uses language to learn norms of
society
MOST IMPORTANT FOR MEAD - mind allows thought (inner
conversation)
Self - our ability to reflect on ourselves from the perspective of others
Think about what other people think of us in order to develop self
The looking glass self (By Cooley 1912)
When people look in the mirror and reflect upon
themselves they ask themselves what do others think of
me?
Pygmalion effect - a self fulling prophecy that others have for us
People tend to label us
Expectation others have of us that affect our behavior
Society - the web of social relationships that humans create
Exists prior to individuals born (but created by individuals
interacting)
Helps to create the individual “selfs”
Particular others - significant others to us
(parents/grandparents/friends) have the greatest effect on us
of who we become
The generalized others - society as a whole (where
everyone's place is in society)
