COMM 250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Mikhail Bakhtin, Relational Dialectics, Systematic Chaos
Document Summary
Influenced by work of mikhail bakhtin through interaction: interactions was the basis of meaning making (correspondence, (cid:498)humans experience collisions between opposing desires and needs within relational communications(cid:499) Goal: to understand dialectical tensions within relationships. Relationships are always in process and relational life is characterized by ongoing tensions between contradictory impulses. Approaches to contradictions: monologic: contradictions are either/or, dualistic: contradictions are separate and somewhat unrelated, dialectic: multiple points of view (constant push and pull between tensions and needs to be managed) People in relationships are interdependent (a behavior by one person necessarily affects the mood/behavior of the other person) Social and cultural contexts affect the process. Social: family and friends have expectations for our relationships, ideas whether our relationships are good/bad. Culture: traditional relationships for the culture, non: contradiction traditional. Dialectics (tensions) are the result of oppositions: motion. Relationships are processes and change over time: praxis. People are choice makers, choice limits choices. Basic interactional dialectics: autonomy and connection.
