ANTH 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Homo Antecessor, Homo Habilis, Homo Floresiensis
Document Summary
Lecture 5/6 part i: the genus homo, h. eraster, several species (9, homo habilis, homo rudolgensis, homo ergaster, homo erectus, homo heidelbergensis, homo floresiensis, homo antecessor, homo neanderalensis, homo sapiens, evolution of the genus homo evolved. Increase in brain size: reduction in face and teeth size. Inclusion of h. habilis into the genus homo: making tools defines humans: term early homo masks taxonomic diversity. If the definition is based on adaptation, h. habilis should not be included in the genus. Increase cranial capacity with little or no increase in body size. Advantages and disadvantages of large brains: advantages increased ability to learn, intelligence, disadvantages, requires more care to raise offspring, difficulties during birthing, h. habilis, fully bipedal, narrower pelvis. Increased muscle efficiency during locomotion: offspring born more immature. Lengthened infancy: bigger brains, narrowing pelvis must have reduced the proportion of brain growth that occurred before birth, pelvis: narrow medio-lateral (side to side) but deep (antero-posterior or back to front)
