The delicate balance parents face: have children who are compliant, conventional, and cooperate, have children who are independent, have initiative, and are individuals. Punishment: the oldest parenting strategy in book, concept: if a particular act yields something aversive, it is less likely to be repeated. Punishment is a behaviorism construct: any behavior that occurs more frequently is being reinforced and any behavior that decreases is being punished, generally positive things are reinforcing and negative things are punishing. Types of punishment: apply something aversive, removing something rewarding.
