25-50 years of research: failure to establish any one school/theory/model is superior to any other. The dodo effect- everyone has won and all must have prizes! Majority of studies show that no one form of legitimate psychotherapy is superior to others (although) some are better for specific conditions) Therapy may not work as a result of any specific ingredients of individual therapies, but as a result of factors that appear to be shared by all legitimate therapies. > techniques/models: therapists"s belief in the type of therapy they practice 15% > therapeutic relationship factors: positive emotions and affection between therapist and client 30% Pros- provides list of validated treatments for consumers (not unlike fda) Cons- stringent criteria to meet (may not suit all treatments) Role of the psychoanalyst is a neutral observer and interpreter . They may avoid eye contact and may even remain out of sight.
