Perhaps it is because we imagine ourselves of being a part of a community based on a shared trait, regardless of how interpersonally close we can be. Is an imagined community that is focused on the homeland: there are often strong sentiments associated with nationalism that can lead to, or contribute to violent conflict. Pre 18th century: in the european world, allegiance is given to the sovereign because they gain their authority from god (divine right) 18th century to wwi: the advent of conscripted armies, the increase of military technology and the development of capitalism develop nationalism military technology. People either unite (and form collective identities) or are dominated/ exploited by more (cid:858)po(cid:449)erful(cid:859) states trade. People form collective identities around centers of commerce centers of commerce draw money and people and project power and security. Wwi becomes an international conflict with nationalist elements.
