BSC 385 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Vito Volterra, Interspecific Competition, Intraspecific Competition
Document Summary
The model of logistic growth includes a term for intraspecific competition but can be easily expanded to include the effects of interspecific competition on population growth. This development was made independently by two scientists: vito volterra and alfred. We can express the population growth of two species of potential competitors with two logistic equations. Here, n1 and n2 are the population sizes of species 1 and 2, k1 and k2 are their carrying capacities, and rmax1 and rmax2 are their respective intrinsic rates of increase. Population growth rate will slow as resources become limiting at high densities. But resources can also reduce by the competing species. The effect of interspecific competition is included in the lotka-volterra model by the two terms - 12n2 and - 21n1. These two terms are called competition coefficients. Competition coefficients express the competitive effect of one species on another.
