Began as a result of lingering tension from wwi, economic upheaval, and the. Responsible for mass destruction on global level, especially in europe and japan. How does this affect the art market: nyc becomes new art capital almost over night, 1945 marks immediate shift in art. Close of wwii: post war imagery where artists become fascinated with asking the purpose of our existence. Occurred during the late 40s and early 50s as artists were concerned with stretching boundaries of artistic expressionism. Paintings are abstract but connect to artists point of view. Artists tried to strike a cord with the viewer. Gestural abstraction: aka: action painting, gesture painting, emphasis on the gesture or action of paint application (the brush, ultimate focus on the process, spontaneity, improvisation, energy, and chance, overwhelming influence of surrealism.
