Ex: kid announced live that he was going to the bathroom right. Used to send news feeds back to the studios. Networks use these to send programs to affiliates. Satellite"s orbit is synchronized with earth"s orbit. Satellite stays in one place in relation to earth. Ex: hbo sends stuff via uplink to cable companies" downlinks all over the country. Initial use: programming for the geographically challenged. Anyone can do whatever they want for 30 mins or an hour except advertising. People can put whatever they want on there => bad stuff. Not owned by a network and not affiliated with a network. Has to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Aim low so you don"t go over anyone"s head. : you"ve got families divided, watching their own shows, so you don"t need shows that appeal to everyone. Show can be successful with fewer viewers now.
