Used to give our most in depth thoughts. Over time, printers started producing more in vernacular. Led to it becoming a mass media. Books were judged on number of copies. After second world war, saw growth in book industry, cuz of (4) Cheaper, easy to carry -> very popular. Publishing firms becoming part of large businesses. One large corporation owns many publishing companies. Also more educated people -> more reading. Throw away newspapers and magazines, tv passes off, etc . Permanent storage of books has been institutionalized. Having more than one person read the same book. Sit alone reading a book, at your own pace, giving it your own interpretation. So author can develop of ideas better. Can develop over many pages, at great depth. Give us a new worldview, new beliefs, new self images change people. As you age, what books you read tell you something about yourself, reminders. Used to be run by just book lovers.
