Marriage was an expectation; love could exist but that doesn"t mean it was a prerequisite. Love used to be a sign of affection; men to men romance was intense bond of intimacy. Romance used to = masculinity; women too dumb to know how to write true romantic forms. Media/movie trope: men fucks up, needs to do an obnoxious, public romantic gesture to prove his love for her; she just falls into love without any control. Heteronormativity is an unavoidable structure of social life - always assumed = privileged. Homosexuality becomes the other where heterosexuality defines itself.
