Document Summary

Fixed alternative questions: select answer from a given set, limits answering potential when other answers are possible, good with finite possible answers. Open ended questions: participants use own words to answer, summarized with content analysis, looking for reoccurring themes. Rating scales: fixed alternative where respondent indicates magnitude on a scale. Likert scale: respond with level of agreement. Semantic differential: measures psychological distance between connotation of words, means associated with word by definition not part of word, differentiate attitudes based on 3 dimensions, evaluate (good vs bad, potency (strong vs weak, activity (active vs passive) Social desirable responding: answer how they think researcher wants or what is perceived as appropriate. Response set: giving only moderate answers or always agreeing/disagreeing. Deal with these problems by: altering wording. Measuring observed behavior: accuracy- answer is either right or wrong. Latency- speed of onset: duration- how long behavior lasts, amplitude- size of response.
