PHYS 131 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Dioptre, Virtual Image, Thin Lens
Document Summary
For seeing at a distance, the eye muscles are relaxed. The far point of a normal eye is infinity. If an object is at infinity (or very far away) then its rays run parallel and the image is located at the focal point. Since the image must also lie on the retina, the focal point of a normal, relaxed eye lies on the retina. The focal length of the human eye focused at infinity is the same as the distance from cornea to retina. Eye lens is thin for viewing distant objects: focal point is on the retina via the cornea only. Eye lens has a power of zero diopters! Eye lens becomes thicker (bulgy) for seeing close objects: focal length is shortened. Accommodation- the ability of the eye to adjust its focal length. For normal vision the far point is infinity. The cornea provides an image on the retina without the help of the eye lens.
