BIOL 190 Lecture 9: 3/9 pt 3
Document Summary
Direct transfer of molecules/ions from one cell to an adjacent cell. Released by a cell in one part of the body. Received by a target" cell elsewhere in body. Signal binds to a specific receptor protein on targets cells membrane. Transmits the message to the appropriate part of the cell. To the nucleus (to alter gene expression) To internalized glucose transport proteins (in response to insulin) Convey messages received at the cell surface to specific responses within the cell. We already know cells can attach to the ecm but cells can also attach to other cells. Adjacent cells in many animal tissues* are often directly connected by cell junctions consisting of specific proteins. *tissue- next level of biological organization above the cell; refers to a group of cells of the same type, e. g. epithelial tissue, connective tissue etc. (tight junctions prevent fluid from moving across a layer of cells. Look like the adjacent membranes are sewn together.
