Public demanded an increased voice in government, but king louis philippe refused to satisfy the request. King abdicated, government replaced by the constituent assembly, working class was still not represented. French realism arose simultaneously with the 1848 revolution. Realism- an artistic movement in mid 19th century france that embraced observation and direct experience. Artists represented the contemporary social conditions, rejected academic traditions, historical and fictional subjects. Realism is a highly political style, championing laborers and common country folk. Sought to equate contemporary subject matter with the traditional themes (high arts) This work was placed in the annual salon in paris. Prestigious exhibition- jury chooses what art enters the salon. This work was in the salon from 1850-51. You can tell because of ragged clothes. Political work- painted one year after 1848 revolution. Working class rebelled against government for better working conditions and higher pay. The annual salon has wealthy aristocrats that attend. They reacted as unfamiliar to the artwork.
