Document Summary

Remember, the function of the heart is to move oxygenated blood through the body via the left side of the heart and take deoxygenated blood back to the lungs via the right side of the heart. Right and left heart must maintain equal output to function appropriately. If the right heart fails to pump probably, blood backs up into the body tissues causing edema and congestion of the abdominal organs. If the left heart fails to pump properly, blood backs up into the lungs causing congestion. If bad enough it will back up into lungs > right heart > body tissues. Ability to increase cardiac output during increased activity some people have large cardiac reserves and others do not. Co = number of times heart beats per minute x how much blood the heart pumps with each beat. Hr regulated by sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system. Sv depends on: preload, afterlong, contractility vagus nerve.
