European racial ideas: slavery was happening around the world already, technological advantage - different, skin color - different, cultural differences. Irony of nature they are inferior to us: religion british wanted to teach them their beliefs, puritan beliefs. Why slavery lasted so long: money / business multi-trillion dollar organization. Africa was sending their own people to go capture more: political enemies. Peculiar institution = jefferson was in love with a slave but if he sets her free, she might leave. Got to sit up every once in awhile. The ones that escaped free committed suicide because they thought their life was over: then they were taken to stage where people bid on them and then taken home. Slave rate: 10% in northern colonies, 40% in south, 57% in south carolina, at the time of the civil war = 9 million slaves. Blacks: not everyone who was black was a slave.
