Document Summary

Platform - statement of what a party believes. The national democratic party showed little support for civil rights before 1960: both national parties had similarly moderate stances, moderation was a result of compromise between southern and non-southern democrats. Truman embraced civil rights in 1948; however, a moderate approach was adopted in the 1950s to appeal to southern democrats: the 1952 compromise upset both sides. Johnson sides with northern and western democrats, neglecting southern democrats, in 1964. Data is gathered from political party platforms from 1920 to 1968. 1940s: the democratic platform included fair employment practices, public education, fair housing, and public accommodations. 1920s, 1940s, 1950s: sporadic voting rights activity appears on the democratic platform. Black-republican ties began to break in the 1920s and 1930s. Fdr solidi ed black democratic ties for two reasons: economic appeals, great migration, the new deal pushed southern conservatives to the republican party. (at this point, there was little di erence between southern democrats and republicans).
