Elements of participant observation: observer"s presence in a social situation, purpose of scientific investigation, face-to-face relationship with the observed (varying degrees of being involved, participants in their natural life setting, gathers data about the phenomena. Difference -> ethnography is just observing, participant observation involves observing and interacting with the environment; takes ethnography a step further. Complete participant observation: studying a situation that one is already an ordinary participant, all human beings are ordinary participants, know the rules, regulations, etc. **6 differences of active po and complete po / ordinary po** Dual purpose = you are not only wanting to observe activities and people, but you want to engage in those activities. Explicit awareness = becomes explicitly aware of their surroundings; paying attention to little things (sounds, everything) and choosing to do so. Wide-angle lens = broader observations; observe noises, words, etc. ; listening to everything and paying attention to it.
