Conflict Skills: the ability to manage conflict through communication
Assertiveness Skills: refers to the goal of being able to assert yourself into the communication
Argumentation skills: the goal of constructing arguments
Competence: rests in the perception
The Cost of Friendships
Personal Relationships: carry costs and rewards
What does it cost for you to have a friendship with your closest friend
What are the benefits of your friendships
Topics among friends
Topic Development: the management of a topic under discussion
Topic Shift: a move away from the direct subject
Abstraction of Skills
Level: Where the skills exist
Micro-level: gestures, eye contact, smiling, vocabulary, articulation, and vocal variety
Macro-level: represents the assembly of micro-level to create results
Three types of Credibility
1. Initial Credibility- comes from a speakers reputation and occurs before the speech starts

o Turtle- slouching
Confidence "Its all in how you present yourself"
2. Derived Credibility- created by the content and delivery of the speech
Ideas that are organized and well supported with convincing evidence will enhance credibility
as will a delivery that is practiced and engaged
3. Eduring Credibility- impression that a speaker leaves with the audience
If the audience has a feeling of trust after the speech, they are more likely to believe the speaker
and do what he or she has asked
