What is "public" speaking
• One person to many people
Three purposes:
o To inform
o To persuade
o To honor
Delivery Options:
• Impromptu: least preparation
• Manuscript: written ahead of time and read word for word to the audience
• Memorized: a manuscript speech that is recited by memory
• Extemporaneous: carefully planned and prepared ahead of time
o Style of your upcoming informative and persuasive speeches
Shaping an Extemporaneous Speech
Where:
o Situation analysis- in what environment will you be presenting
Who:
o Audience Analysis- what people will you be presenting to?
Why:
o Purpose Analysis-
What I could speak about
• Creating a product and speaking in Milan
• Affects of sugar in a diet, comparing soda and amounts of sugar
• Workout (why your body adapts)
• Human nature and symmetry
• Sing
First Step:
• Topic vs. Purpose
o Topic- what you want to talk about; topic focus; first video we watched
o Purpose- why you are talking about it; message focused; spoken word video we watched
• Make sure your purpose is clear
