PSYC 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Dichotic Listening Test, Cocktail Party, Behaviorism
Document Summary
During conscious activities there is awareness of these activities, and individuals are paying attention to what is going on. In order to study divided attention and selective attention a dichotic listening study is performed. Selective attention: can pay attention to one thing or a certain source of information and tune out or ignore the other outside sources. To study the selective attention, scientists use the dichotic listening test: The ways of studying consciousness: structuralism - introspectrum, adherently subjective, biased. Cannot scientifically study: behaviorism (the study of behavior, everyone can measure behaviors. Can study and measure, but inferences have to happen: psychophysiology (taking body processes to make inferences) Inferences come about: subjective report (individuals give researcher what is going on in their mind) Makes inferences about certain things after studying different behaviors or feelings of different people. Altered states of consciousness: dreaming, drug states, hypnosis, meditation, near death experiences.
