Memories are a place to store information that is considered a memory, or a process. Explicit memory: consciously aware of; memory is the object of memory processes. Implicit memory: unconscious; use memory as a tool. Box model or the modal model of memory. Each box in the modal model has its own capacity and duration: Sensory box: duration is super fast ( of a sec); has a huge capacity. Short term box: durations lasts 20-30 sec; has little capacity. Long term box: duration lasts as long as the human lasts; the capacity is very very large. Forgetting is the loss of retained information over time. There are many things that cause forgetting: organic reasons, time, lack of practice, learning failure, emotional trauma, memory failure, retrieval failure h. When measuring the short the short term memory capacity it depends on the unit/ chunk (meaningful or well-practiced unit of information) Maintenance vs elaborative rehearsal (meaningless vs meaning something)
