Take the long view and put things into context. The bottom party of society (those that work but not own land) are having an extremely difficult time in agriculture: are being squeezed out. Immigration form abroad begins to falter in texas. Texans leave and new texans arrived: not only from other countries but from other areas of the united states. More white supremacy and celebration of confederacy. Social and cultural change (from self-sufficiency to market economy) When prices collapse there is a downside economic depression. Those more well off, are able to ride out harder economic depression. People often move from a low wage to a high wage area: germany to texas. In texas people move from partial participation to complete participation in the marketplace. Immigration was less monitored than today but economic disparity was common as of today. After the civil war, texas lost 1/3 of the state income.
