Jamestown 1607 and founding of virginia -> first permanent english colony in north america. Headrights: land and labor incentives to attract settlers. Company rule -> governor and advisory council. House of burgesses -> 1619: representative legislator. Virginia had area all the way up to ny to carolinas but later broke up and divided. Although the english relied on the native americans, they were not thankful for them -> awful winter and many people died -> some accounts of cannibalism. 1609 -> john smith was resented off the colonies for being too forceful on colonizing. Pocahontas -> marries john wolfe -> brings tobacco to the new world. England starts a commercial system of selling/trading goods. Colonies sell what"s on demand to england and england trades off -> mercantilism. In order for mercantilism to work, you have to have a prospering settlement -> not just workers. If you can get yourself over here, then you get 50 acres.
