Lake champlain and lake george were main passes between the seaboard colonies and canada before exploration further west. Oriented to the interior as opposed to the ocean. Adirondack mountains: old, rugged mountain region, different geography from other mountain ranges. Great gap: hudson and mohawk river valleys, natural, easy approach to west interior, form gateway to lake plains and through prairies to rocky mountains, mohawk valley earliest and most inviting gateway. Spillways: formed by glaciation, lake iroquois formed and spillways were formed through the mountains (creating mohawk river valley, etc. ) Mohawk and hudson valleys were the place for major battlegrounds during fight for supremacy between french and english. West point: big bend in river, vital tactic spot, later became home to american military academy.
