#20 is on the test
The eastern pacific ocean has a cold front because it comes from the Arctic Ocean
Average
• Be able to explain averages with extremes in the mix
Concept of Extreme values
• Extreme values are outliers
• Ex: 99,97,98,96,98,56,2
o What are the outliers?
o You would think 2 and 56 but you need to know where the data is coming from
o It is actually the 90s because the temperature were taken in Alaska in January
o This is what led to the dismissal of the Ozone Hole
Extremes
• Heat
o You can cluster spots in the north from 1936/1937
• DUST BOWL (a global reason)
o Texas, new Mexico, Arizona have record heat in same day (a regional/local reason why it
happened)
• Cold
o Same clustering (the 30s) show up again but for extreme coldness
o 1899 - only time Florida went below 0
o Both heat and cold is in west Texas
Concept of Variability
• 3 different cases for climate change
a. Increase average temperature - more hot weather and more record weather, and less cold
weather
b. Keep average temp but increase the variability - more record hot weather and more record cold
weather
c. Increase both average temperature and increase the average number of events (variability) much
more hot weather and much more record hot weather and less cold weather
• Last 3 years have been the hottest on record
• Last 3 months have been the hottest on record
Picture of global temperature
• There are cycles of blue cycles and red cycles
• Right now we are in a deep red cycle
Diurnal Cycle - day and night
• Measuring temperature

Document Summary
The eastern pacific ocean has a cold front because it comes from the arctic ocean. Average: be able to explain averages with extremes in the mix. Concept of extreme values: extreme values are outliers, ex: 99,97,98,96,98,56,2, what are the outliers, you would think 2 and 56 but you need to know where the data is coming from. It is actually the 90s because the temperature were taken in alaska in january: this is what led to the dismissal of the ozone hole. Concept of variability: 3 different cases for climate change. Increase average temperature - more hot weather and more record weather, and less cold weather: keep average temp but increase the variability - more record hot weather and more record cold weather. Increase both average temperature and increase the average number of events (variability) much more hot weather and much more record hot weather and less cold weather. Last 3 years have been the hottest on record.
