Arizona, new mexico, western colorado, eastern utah, southeastern nevada, and northern mexico states of chihuahua and sonora. Rivers: rio grande river, colorado river. Wet season july september (storms isolated/unpredictable). Precipitation varies: droughts vs sudden heavy rainstorms (quick surface runoff, flooding, and erosion). Pueblo (diverse languages, but shared culture): may not share the same language but share a common culture and traditions, located in the same general location. Acoma pueblo, new mexico: pueblo people: hopi, zuni, acoma, laguna, rio grande pueblos. Large villages with distinctive apartment complexes or pueblos. Farmers: one crop each year, plus some hunting and gathering. Dualism in cosmology (world and religion is dualistic): Sacred rituals in kivas: building that is used for rituals, considered a ritual place. Public kachina dances: kachina costume makes the connection between deity and man. Navajo and apache (ad 1,400 1,500): athabascan speaking with recent origins in canada/alaska, traditionally hunter and gatherers, but adopted agriculture from puebloans, conducted a lot of herding.
