Degree needed to be an audiologist- doctorate degree. Collects sound and funnels it into the ear canal - main function. Open on one end, closed on the other. Long (2. 5 cm) and narrow (5 7 mm) canal leading up to the ear drum. Ear wax protects your ear from foreign bodies. Protects deeper structures such as ear drum. Functions of the outer ear (pinna and ear canal) Protects delicate deeper structures of the ear. Cerumen has a foul odor which repels insects. Canal is bent not allowing straight access in. Amplifies sounds around these frequencies by roughly 17 db spl. Can tell where sound is coming from. Should be air filled space- should be no fluid. Medially, continuous with mucosal lining of middle ear. Two layers are joined by connective tissue. Cone of light- when you look at the eardrum it should have a cone of light. Three tiny bones bridging outer and inner ears (ossicles)
