Chapter 5: love and choosing a life partner. Love is a deep and vital emotion: not a crush. Love satisfies legitimate personal needs: vs. illegitimate personal needs. Love involves caring and acceptance: accepting a person for who they are, not trying to change them. Research shows that women and men value psychic as well as sexual intimacy. Feelings of intimacy: desire and expressing those desires/feelings are not the same thing. In our society, women express feelings of love more than men do. O(cid:272)iologist fra(cid:374)(cid:272)es(cid:272)a ca(cid:374)(cid:272)ia(cid:374): (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) are (cid:373)ade to feel respo(cid:374)si(cid:271)le for lo(cid:448)e"s endurance/success. Love is expressed mostly verbally- women are the more verbal sex. Nonverbal expressions of love that men may make are not credited as love. Intimacy involves sharing that can take place on two levels: sexual intimacy, psychic/emotional intimacy- engaging in self-disclosure. Committed lovers have fun together; they also share tedious times.
