Girolamo fracastoro (italy 1546) - came up with context of contagious disease. Yersinia pestis - black death plague: 3 types of plagues, bubonic. Pathogen travels to and starts growing in lymph glands - become infected. Form buboes - swollen and painful - surface of skin turns red. Person experiences local hemorrhages that will be dark (blue/black) in color in skin - prostration occurs (laid low) - shock occurs - delirium occurs: death can happen 3 - 5 days, pneumonic.
