PSY 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Robert A. Rescorla, Classical Conditioning, Drug Tolerance
Document Summary
Classical conditioning= pavlov"s conditioning (bells & dogs): learning predictable signals (a stimulus in the world that will predict that another stimulus response will happen) The pairing b/w an unconditioned stimulus (ucs) & an unconditioned response (ucr) is given by nature. Food (the ucs) automatically produced salivation (the ucr) Conditioned = learned but unconditioned = don"t need to learn/ from nature (nervous sweaty) Sound of tuning for (cs) precedes & predicts the presentation of food (ucs) [cs = conditioned stimulus/ cr = conditioned response] Cs must precede & predict the ucs ~ brain is learning b/w accidental & predictable signal. Ex: robert rescorla: dogs learn relationship b/w tone (cs) & shock (ucs) to learn to escape shock. Ex: pavlov"s dogs began to salivate before they got the food powder. Ex: pavlov"s dogs would salivate on trials that omitted the food powder. Tapping and eye closing w/out the puff. Most classical conditions are fragile ~ brain resets when the association is gone.
