Document Summary

Amino acid catabolism: require few enzymes (proteases) to break peptide bond between aa (proteolysis), some enzymes remove 1 aa at a time from protein chain, others break peptide bonds between specific. 1: as water soluble vitamins increase, amount in urine increases accumulation limited, but fat soluble accumulation can increase b/c poorly excreted by kidneys & dissolve in fat. Equation: f: net flex, p: permeability (for particular molecule at specific temperature, a: surface area, co-ci concentration outside concentration inside, the greater the p the faster the net flex. Diffusion through lipid bilayer: nonpolar molecules diffuse faster across plasma membranes because they are very permeable & can dissolve in nonpolar fatty acid chains. Role of electrical forces on ion movement: membrane potential: separation of electrical charges found in all membranes of cells, even if no difference in ion concentration, still net movement of ions in cell. 2: electrochemical gradient: direction/magnitude of ion flux depends on concentration/electrical difference.
