“A sequence of social defined events and roles that the individual enacts overtime.” (Giele &
Edler, 1998, p. 22)
Life Course Terms
• Life course event
o “ A sequence of socially defined events and roles that individuals enacts
overtime” (pg. 22)
o birth, graduation from college, getting married, getting a job. Something that
happens to a person that has implication for the lifecourse.
• Life course state or role
o Present life course position. Each have particular duration. Child, student, spouse,
parent.
• Life course transition
o Events that change your state or role. When you get married your role changes to
a spouse. When you get a job your role changes to an employee. Parent, etc.
