Document Summary
Psychoanalytic approach: freudian philosophy, practice, and assessment, while people have speculated throughout history about the essence of personality, the first known personality theorist did not appear until the late 1800"s. The neurologist sigmund freud, amid extreme criticism, continued to construct, promote and defend his ideas. Although freud wasn"t the first to speak about the unconscious, nobody has put so much emphasis on unconscious processes in understanding human actions before or since. Similarly, when we ask if our dreams reflect inner fears and impulses, we"re following a popularized freud theory. Again, while people have interpreted dreams for thousands of years, Freud has been the first to integrate dream interpretation into a broader theory of psychology: freudian comparisons permeate our society. As one author put it, "freud"s subconscious mind theories. They have had a profound influence on contemporary film, theater, books, political advertising, publicity, legal arguments and even religion.
