Document Summary

Second major sorting centre (first is tgn) Junction point between lysosomal pathway and endocytic pathway. Endosomes must be able to differentiate between cargo headed to lysosome and receptors that must be returned to either the tgn, or plasma membrane. Endosomes receive receptors and cargo from the plasma membrane that are headed in different destinations: Many receptors are returned to the same plasma membrane domain from which they came from while their cargo is passed onto lysosome. Some receptors are not recycled, but instead are sent to lysosome to be degraded with or without its cargo. Some receptors along with their cargo are transferred to another plasma membrane domain allowing specific cargo to be passed from one side of the cell to another, the process known as transcytosis. The acidic environment of the endosome determines whether the cargo is released with the receptor it came with.
