AJ 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Distributive Justice
Document Summary
Recurring principles in justice: there are at least three recurring principles in every discussion of justice: equity, equality and impartiality. Every child is typically given the same allowance by parents unless discrepancies between the children, such as age or responsibilities, require different amounts. Kids are prone to fairness problems even before they understand more complex conceptions of justice: what kids experience is unjust treatment and thus unfair treatment. Equality and impartiality are inextricably related to the idea of justice. Therefore, it is in the self-interest of all to see this orderly nature continue as it provides the basis for a decent life and sufficient human happiness. To put it another way, unequal citizens will earn unequal shares. Instead, we"ll turn our focus to remedial justice. That form of justice is often concerned with desert; however, the problem in punitive justice is whether punishment is warranted, rather than social benefits or opportunities.
