SOCI 11A Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Hookup Culture, Slut, Double Bind

67 views2 pages

Document Summary

When two people get together normally at a party with alcohol, doesn"t necessarily mean having sex. Ambiguity with the word hookup puts men and women in diff. positions. Men aren"t expected to be in a romantic relationship. Men are supposed to sleep with many women, women are not. Fear of stigma constrained women"s behavior and perhaps even shape their preferences. Guys can have sex with all the girls and it makes them more of a man, but if a girl does then all of a sudden she"s a slut. The relational imperative pushed them to participate in committed relationships; however, relationships did not mesh well with the demands of college, as they inhibited classed self-development strategies. Basically how to be a good girl who limits their sexual activity to relationships and good students who did not allow relational commitments to derail their educational and career development. Good girl and bad student vs. bad girl and good student.
