The art of editing occurs when the combination of two or more shots takes meaning to the next level excitement, insight, shock, or the epiphany of discovery. : ken dancyger. A fundamental assumption behind all film editing is the tendency of viewers to interpret shots in relation to surrounding shots. Editing: the process by which the editor selects, arranges, and assembles the visual, sound, and special effects to tell a story. The editor decides what shots to use and how to use them. For every 20 minutes shot, 1 minute is used. Shot: basic building block of film editing. Meaning comes from the editing, not from the physical reality that was initially shot. Technique: cutting and splicing (the joining together of two shots) Craft: ability to join shots and produce a meaning that does not exist in either one of the individual shots.
