Document Summary

Chapter 7 part 3: independent samples t- tests. Single sample t-test one (is compared to the population mean) Paired sample t-test two (same or matched participants) Allows researchers to evaluate the mean difference between 2 separate samples. The identifying characteristic is the existence of 2 separate or independent samples. An independent-measures design can be used to test for mean differences between 2 distinct groups (such as men vs. women) or between 2 different treatment conditions (such as drug vs. no drug) The people in one sample are different than the people in the other samples. The question becomes, how extreme is the difference between the two means? (since we already know that the two samples/treatments differ, it simply becomes the question of, how much?) The mean physical health score (phs) of children whose parents are married will be equal to the mean phs of children whose parents are getting divorced.
