Sound waves travel through the air and get picked up by the ear. Understanding the different levels of languages helps to understand the rules and specific patterns and errors people make in speech. Phoneme > morpheme > word > phrase > sentence. Smallest unit of speech sound that is used in a language. Each language has it"s own set of phonemes that are allowable in the language. Are not specific letters, multiple phonemes can make up a letter. Smallest unit that with a definable meaning or grammatical function. Important to be grouped together properly to have a proper meaning. Appropriate meaning assigned not just by words in isolation, but by relationships between words. Studied how words and phrases translate into meaning. Way to map the structure of a sentence.
